The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has long been a beacon for cinema enthusiasts, showcasing the rich tapestry of global filmmaking while celebrating both established and emerging talents. Since its inception in 1985, TIFF has garnered international recognition, becoming a vital platform for filmmakers to present their work in Japan. The festival has evolved over the years, reflecting the shifting landscapes of cinema and society while remaining committed to its core mission: promoting cultural exchange through film.

One interesting fact about TIFF is that it was Japan’s first international film festival, and it has hosted numerous world premieres over the years, attracting a plethora of acclaimed directors, actors, and industry professionals. TIFF is also known for its Gala Selection, which features films that have generated significant buzz at other international film festivals, further highlighting its commitment to showcasing quality cinema.

This year, the festival celebrates its 37th edition, and the excitement is palpable! TIFF premiered its trailer in theatres across Japan on September 20. The 60-second teaser showcases the Opening film “11 Rebels” and the Closing film “Marcello Mio,” along with 13 films from the highly anticipated Gala Selection. This section highlights films that have captured the attention of audiences and critics alike at various international festivals, alongside some of Japan’s biggest blockbusters.

The trailer is accompanied by the official TIFF festival song, “Desire,” performed by Hibiki, a promising Japanese singer and university student from Kyushu, who is on the brink of a national breakthrough. Her song resonates with TIFF’s vision of elevating women’s voices in cinema, particularly through the newly established Women’s Empowerment section aimed at fostering female talent in the film industry.

In Hibiki’s words, “I created ‘Desire’ while imagining a protagonist who lives confidently despite being swayed by the era of social media. I believe that many of the films selected at TIFF can be interpreted and valued differently by each audience member, and I would be delighted if this song could contribute, even a little, to boost the excitement of the festival. I also heard that a new Women’s Empowerment section has been established this year, focusing on women. Personally, I am very excited to see the films in this section.”

As the festival approaches, the combination of captivating films and the evocative sound of “Desire” promises to elevate the cinematic experience, creating an exhilarating atmosphere for filmmakers and audiences alike. Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of film at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival!
